Writing together sounds like homework until you actually try it. A shared journal gives you both a space to say things that feel too vulnerable for a face-to-face conversation, or to capture memories you'll want to revisit years from now.
You don't need matching leather notebooks. A shared digital journal works just as well. The only rule is honesty.
How to use these prompts
Pick one prompt per day, or one per week if daily feels like too much. Both of you write your answer separately, then read each other's. Don't judge, don't correct. Just absorb.
Getting Started (Prompts 1-10)
- 1. What's one thing about our relationship that makes you feel safe?
- 2. Describe your perfect ordinary day together. Not a vacation, just a Tuesday.
- 3. What's a small thing I do that you never want me to stop doing?
- 4. Write about a moment when you felt really proud of us as a couple.
- 5. What's something you've been wanting to tell me but haven't found the right moment for?
- 6. If our relationship had a soundtrack, what are the top three songs?
- 7. What does trust look like to you? Be specific.
- 8. Describe the exact moment you realized this was something real.
- 9. What's a challenge we overcame that made us stronger?
- 10. Write a short letter to me that I can reread on a hard day.
Going Deeper (Prompts 11-20)
- 11. What's a fear you carry about our future? Be honest.
- 12. What does intimacy mean to you beyond the physical?
- 13. Write about a time I hurt you that you've forgiven but never talked about.
- 14. What part of your identity do you sometimes feel you lose in our relationship?
- 15. If you could relive one day we've had together, which one and why?
- 16. What's a boundary you need me to respect more?
- 17. How has loving me changed you?
- 18. What does home feel like to you? Is it a place or a feeling?
- 19. What's the hardest thing about being in a relationship?
- 20. Write about something you admire about me that you rarely say out loud.
Looking Forward (Prompts 21-30)
- 21. Where do you see us in five years? Paint the picture.
- 22. What's one thing you want us to experience together before the year ends?
- 23. What does growing old together look like in your mind?
- 24. Write about a tradition you want us to start.
- 25. What's a goal we should chase together this year?
- 26. If we could live anywhere for one year, where and why?
- 27. What kind of partner do you want to become over the next decade?
- 28. Write about the family or life you want to build, no matter how unconventional.
- 29. What's one promise you want to make to me right now?
- 30. Write a love letter. No rules, no structure. Just say what you feel.
Tips for making it stick
- Set a recurring reminder so it becomes routine, not a chore
- Don't edit yourself. First drafts are the most honest
- Read your partner's entries with curiosity, not criticism
- Go back and reread old entries together every few months
- If writing feels hard, voice-note your answer and transcribe it later
